Why Your Weight Loss Program Won't Work
By Nick K. Clipton

If you have been dieting, working out and watching your calories, fat intake and carbohydrate consumption and are still struggling with your weight.

Here are a few reasons that your efforts may not be paying off.

First, analyze your diet.
If you are starving yourself, stop. Our bodies work in a complex rhythm, and when you suddenly stop consuming your bodies normal intake of calories, your body goes into "starvation mode" and will hold onto those calories, store them as fat, and your metabolism rate will drop, preventing those measly calories from burning at all.

Second, exercise and proper nutrition go hand in hand.
Do not expect to lose weight without doing both. Your body requires a certain amount of calories just to function - and that depends on your activity level. If you are highly active (sports, exercise) your body will burn calories much quicker, because you may have more muscle tone, and muscle burns calories faster than fat. However, if you are not eating a healthy diet, and living on fast food, you are setting yourself up for failure. High fat/high calorie foods make one feel sluggish and less energetic. This can prevent the desire to exercise, thus preventing muscle from being built (from within, by proper nutrition) and without, from lace of activity. Keeping a healthy balance of nutrition and exercise will ensure your weight loss success.

Finally, drinking plenty of water is vital to losing weight.

Our bodies are made up of 80% fluid, and water is required for our bodies to function properly, digest food, flush out impurities and work efficiently. Drinking the recommended eight glasses of day is just basic need. In addition, if you are working out regularly, your body will require additional fluids on top of those eight glasses. Avoid flavored waters, or sugary drinks. Those add additional calories will need burned, and sugar is a catalyst for storing fat.

By giving your body the correct amount of healthy calories per day, to function properly, and burning off the additional, unneeded calories through exercise and an active lifestyle, along with drinking the required amount of water per day, you should see drastic improvements to your weight loss program. If you do not, there could be a fourth reason: a medical issue that must be addressed.

Abdominal Fat - A Serious Health Risk We Can Combat
By Rosemary Kurtz

Unless someone has been blessed with the perfect genetic makeup, most adults in the civilized world today, especially women, have struggled with some amount of abdominal fat. We hate it. It's unattractive, inconvenient - and it could seriously impact our health.

Where does this fat come from? Why is it so hard to get rid of? Why don't exercises make it disappear? There are many factors at work.

We know that the fat on our bodies comes from the food we eat. There have been enough weight-loss programs and diet information around for the last few decades that we know that if we eat more calories than we expend, we're going to gain weight as fat.

Each person's genetics also play a big role. As soon as we are conceived, we have a genetic "map" for what our hair and eye color will be, the size and shape of our nose, our height, our body type, and how our fat will be distributed over our body. Some people's metabolism is programmed from conception to run at a faster rate throughout their lifetime, and these people will naturally be thinner than other people. Environmental factors do play a part, but genetic makeup is the key factor.

Women face a special challenge with abdominal fat. In pre-menopausal years, women have fat distributed in the arms, legs, thighs and hips as well as in the belly. As women pass into menopause and the hormone levels change, fat moves from the limbs, thighs and hips into the abdomen. For this reason it's possible for women's waistlines to become bigger without any appreciable weight gain.

It's not just the fat you can see in the mirror. Abdominal fat also lives in the muscles of the abdomen, and crowds the organs in that part of the body. When the organs are crowded, it can cause difficulty in breathing, circulation, and other organ functions. Also, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through these crowded areas of the body. This raises the blood pressure, which in turn speeds up a process of wearing down of the lining of the arteries. When the lining of the arteries is worn down, the body becomes more susceptible to stroke and other health problems.

Abdominal fat affects hormone levels throughout the body. It has also been linked to the development of Type II diabetes, colorectal cancer and breast cancer.

Abdominal fat seems harder to get rid of than fat in other parts of the body because we lose weight uniformly, all over the body. Much as we'd like to just target the belly, the fat is going to come off from around the whole body, and not just the abdominal area. When they diet, people who wear the same rings every day will probably notice that as their belly starts to shrink, their rings will begin to get looser too, because the fat comes off everywhere - fingers too.

How much abdominal fat is too much? There are a couple of rules of thumb to go by. First, measure around the belly at the level of the navel. Don't suck in and don't push the belly out. Just stand normally and wrap a tape measure around without pulling tight, and see what the measurement is. One source suggests that your waist should not measure more than half of your height. Another source suggests that, no matter what your height, your waist measurement should not be more than 33 to 35 inches.

The good news is that we can combat our abdominal fat, no matter what our genetic pre-programming is. The baby boomer generation, currently the adult generation starting to move into the senior years, was raised in a more sedentary lifestyle than any preceding generation, and ate a more processed and fast-food diet than any other generation. This is a very unhealthy lifestyle, and people in this generation will have to make a serious shift in lifestyle to reclaim their health and improve their abdominal fat levels.

Here are some ideas to work with. Reduce portion size, and substitute more fruits and vegetables for simple carbs like white bread and pastas. No canned fruits - they are loaded with sugar. Also, don't depend too much on fruit juices, which are also loaded with sugar. Increase exercise too. When you develop more muscle, your metabolism is higher because lean muscle requires more calories than fat does for maintenance. So, with more muscle you win two ways: you expended calories to build that muscle, and the muscle itself raises your metabolism and consumes more calories just by being there.

Weight training is great for building muscle, and to get some cardio, you don't have to run at top speed. You can walk briskly for a half hour to an hour five or six days a week to reap the benefits of cardio exercise. As a rule of thumb, walk at a pace where you can still hold a conversation, and you'll be fine. Also, be sure you get enough sleep - but not too much. Research has shown that people who consistently get less than five or more than eight hours of sleep per night tend to put on more abdominal fat than those who get the proper amount of rest.

Apply these tips and you will be well on your way to much less abdominal fat and a much healthier lifestyle.

The Best Way to Lose Weight - Important Tips to Remember
By Olivia Wells

Are you thinking of going on a weight loss diet? This article will give you some good advice that you may not have thought about. First of all, it is a good idea to think about all of the benefits of losing weight. There are several health benefits. You will decrease your chances of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. If these problems run in your family, you will want to think even more seriously about trimming the fat. As you lose pounds you will feel better, too, and simple physical tasks such as walking, taking the stairs, housework, and gardening will be easier.

A healthy body image will also give your self-confidence a boost. When you are slim and your muscles are toned, you will feel good about your appearance. Thinking about the benefits of your weight loss will give you helpful encouragement and a sense of purpose.

The best weight loss program is different for each person, but it goes without saying that exercise is one of the best tools in your diet tool bag. Exercise can be done so many different ways, but the keys to success are consistency and intensity. Any form of exercise will improve your health but to lose weight you must push yourself. Generally speaking, walking for an hour each day will cause you to lose pounds. If you are dieting, as well, you can adjust this time. Whatever your exercise schedule, be sure to commit yourself to it.

Your fat loss tool bag also contains some eating tools. Many people think that the best method for getting thin is to follow the best diet fitness plan available. Quite a few dieters opt for choosing a popular get-thin program such as Weight Watchers, Combat the Fat, or Fat Loss 4 Idiots. Selecting one of these diet plans can definitely give you important benefits. One great benefit is structure. You can turn to your diet plan for food lists and menus, and sometimes even recipes. A diet plan also gives you nutritional information and tips to keep your mind focused on your diet. A fitness and diet plan will often provide exercises for you to copy.

There are also some general eating tips that work well for any type of diet. Cut down on the amount of food you eat, but don't restrict yourself too much or your metabolism will slow down. It is best to eat small frequent meals. Also, try to eat less in the latter part of the day. Eat nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and lean dairy products. Flavor your meals with a small portion of lean meat. Above all, cut way down on packaged and sugary or salty foods. Limit your intake of alcoholic beverages. Last but not least, drink plenty of water to fill yourself up and flush the toxins that sabotage a healthy diet.

The best diet fitness plan will be different for each person, so do your homework, have a plan, and be determined to reach your weight loss goals.

Is Estrogen Really Making Your Belly FAT?
By Jenny May

One would think that with all the research done to try and link midlife weight gain in women to changing hormone levels (menopause) science would have uncovered, or at least theorized, a solid explanation by now. But after reading the results of study after study, all that research has only proven that weight gain is largely due to lower activity levels and poor nutrition.

So, scientists have now turned their attention to uncovering why many women in midlife start to accumulate that added weight as fat in the abdominal area. While fluctuating hormone levels, particularly lower estrogen levels, may be partially responsible for the redistribution of fat to the belly area, research is demonstrating that estrogen is not the only hormone responsible for this phenomenon.

It turns out that stress and stress related hormones have been linked to excessive fat storage around the abdominal area. How you ask? Apparently it’s a result of the flight or fight instinct that our distant ancestors were so dependent upon for survival.

During times of stress, mental or physical, the body releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). This generates a release of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol.

The adrenaline released results in instant energy and increased strength. This is what allows people to do superhuman things, like the woman that lifts the car that fell on her son.

Meanwhile, cortisol is responsible for bringing the body back into balance after the stressful event. In other words, cortisol’s job is to stimulate the appetite to replace the carbohydrates and fat that should of been burned while fleeing or fighting the stressful event.

However, as most of you know, today's sources of stress rarely result in calorie expenditure. Stress today is more likely to result in people sitting with frustration or anger while reaching for something to eat.

But the body doesn’t know that it did not expend any calories during the most recent stressful event. So cortisol is still expected to perform by increasing the appetite for carbohydrates and fat.

A recent study conducted by researchers at Yale University and published in the September 2000 issue of Psychosomatic Medicine suggests that cortisol may actually cause fat to be stored in the center of the body. Couple that fact with the fact that the fat cells located in the belly area are richer with stress hormone receptors than fat cells located elsewhere and you have recipe for abdominal obesity.

If the added belly fat is not distressing enough, it should also be noted that belly fat has been linked to an increased risk of developing heart disease.

Never fear, there is a way to combat belly fat generated from stress, it’s exercise. Exercise works to prevent belly fat generated from stress, by reducing the levels of stress hormones in your body. That's right, vigorous exercise generates beta-endorphins. These endorphins are responsible for calming the body down and reducing the level of stress hormones in the body!

How much exercise does one need to combat belly fat in times of stress? I suggest 20-30 minutes of a physical activity you enjoy. Whether it be a 20-30 minute vigorous walk or a weight training session. Just so long as you get the body moving and releasing those beta-endorphins.

Of course exercise also helps to combat belly fat simply by burning calories. This way when cortisol increases your appetite you will have expended the carbohydrate and fat calories during your workout. Allowing cortisol do its job and preventing those extra calories from being stored on your belly.

But do not go overboard, exercising too hard for too long can also generate cortisol. This defeats the purpose of using exercise to combat cortisol and its belly fat generating affects.

So, the next time you start to get stressed out, instead of sitting and chewing food in your frustration, get up and take a 10 minute vigorous walk. This will help beat those stress hormones by releasing beta-endorphins and taking your mind off the thing stressing you out.

Tips for combating stressed out belly fat:

  • Exercise a minimum of 20-30 minutes, 3 days a week
  • Eat small balanced meals 5-6 times a day
  • Snack on whole grain high fiber foods
  • Set time aside to do activities you enjoy
  • Avoid excessive amounts of caffeine, alcohol & cigarettes, these items in excess have been shown to raise cortisol levels.
  • Get your sleep, lack of sleep will also increase cortisol levels.

By incorporating these tips you will be able to stop belly fat before it starts!
